Short Take - iPhone 17 Pro: The Orange Beast

Thank you for listening to the A-Positive podcast, this is another short take, where I take one small perspective inside a much bigger ecosystem. These short takes usually spring from news updates or recent events.

But in this case it’s about iPhone. iPhone 17 Pro to be specific. We’re over half way into the yearly iPhone cycle and here are my thoughts.

Introduction In episode 10 I've discussed my take on the iPhone Air and how I see the Air as Apple’s way of hinting at a future where the iPhone is less about specs on a page and more about presence in your life. A device that disappears until you need it, one that prioritizes simplicity and sustainability, one that quietly blends into the rhythms of your day. A more human kind of technology.

In this episode, I’m breaking down my thoughts on the iPhone 17 Pro series. A total departure from its Air sibling, even though they arrived together. While you’ll notice some common ground between the two, don't be fooled: the "orange beast" is in a league of its own

Longevity Switching gears to the iPhone 17 Pro, longevity here takes on a different flavor. Where the Air with its pro chip has no problem keeping up with you, the Pro declares, “I’ll stay ahead of you.” It’s a device built with such headroom in its silicon, in its cooling, in its storage options, that it feels like it’s already living a few years into the future. You can buy this iPhone and know that even as new software and features roll out, it won’t just keep up but will thrive. And that confidence is probably why most people choose Pro. It’s not only about what it does today, but about how it keeps unlocking new possibilities tomorrow.

While "silicon headroom" and "vapor chambers" sound like technical jargon, they translate into three? big tangible wins for your daily life. For starters there's the "Cool to the Touch" factor. Standard phones often get uncomfortably warm during video recording, navigating the world and gaming. Sometimes even while doing these tasks simulteneously with other tasks. The vapor chamber in iPhone 17 Pro acts like a high-end radiator. It pulls heat away from the chip and spreads it across the entire frame. Your iPhone stays comfortable in your hand, and more importantly, it doesn't slow down to protect itself or dim the display to limit heat generation. You get 100% performance for the duration of your task, not just the first five minutes.

Then there's also the "Invisible" efficiency. The A19 Pro doesn't just work faster; it works easier. It can handle "heavy" tasks like processing a photo or running Apple Intelligence using significantly less power. This means you aren't just getting a bigger battery; you're getting a more fuel-efficient engine. It’s the difference between a car that needs a massive tank and a hybrid that can go further on the same amount of fuel.

And lastly, of course, AI. Artificial Intelligence has been the main topic in tech the last few years. Most AI tasks are incredibly taxing on a phone’s memory and graphics processor. With the A19 Pro's version of the Neural Engine, the iPhone 17 Pro handles AI features locally on the device even better. Not only really fast but also private, with data that stays on your phone. Examples of these are Siri responses, writing tools, and photo "Clean Up" that happen almost instantly. When performing heavier tasks you can let local AI models generate a summary of a long meeting transcript while simultaneously on a video call for the next meeting without the interface stuttering. My personal favourites are e-mail and article summaries for sure.

So longevity wise there seems to be a lot of room for this year’s pro line-up of iPhone. Now that Apple is able to make three distinct models instead of one size fits all, each model can truly shine what it’s made for. And you will experience this on the inside ánd outside.

And even though the iPhone 17 Pro series seems to focus on performance or longevity, Apple did not skimp out on other aspects of a “good” phone.

Sustainability Even at this top tier, sustainability is not an afterthought. Apple has learned that power and responsibility must live side by side. The 17 Pro shows this in its choice of recycled titanium, its reduced environmental footprint, and the way it’s designed to last longer before you even think about replacing it. And that’s meaningful — because for a “Pro” device, sustainability isn’t about restraint. Apple is showing how cutting-edge technology can also be deeply responsible.

Position in the Lineup In the broader iPhone family, the Pro continues to be the aspirational choice. It’s the phone for the creators, the professionals, the enthusiasts who want not just an upgrade, but the best tool. It’s the phone you buy if you see the iPhone not only as a daily driver, but as a creative partner. And yet, Apple has managed to make it not feel exclusionary. The Pro probably is too much for most. I see people not even using all the camera’s, or at least not using the optical options when using their camera, and still it’s there to inspire the many. It sets the tone for where iPhone can go, so that even if you don’t buy it, you understand the direction.

Ecosystem Integration And even at this level, the iPhone 17 Pro doesn’t just join Apple’s ecosystem — it even pushes the ecosystem forward. Think about how ProRes video flows into Final Cut on your Mac, or how its camera system complements the editing power of iPad. For people deeply invested in Apple’s world, the 17 Pro feels less like a phone and more like a hub.

Future Direction And then there’s the future. The Pro seems to be Apple’s testing ground for tomorrow’s technologies. Blurring the line between a smartphone and professional gear. If you put that together with the whole iPhone line-up, so also the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air, you’re not just looking at the present — you’re looking at Apple’s roadmap. The Pro isn’t simply today’s flagship; it’s part of the iPhone of the future.
